Day 5: Astrology – your horoscope, how it does or doesn’t describe you
Astrology is something that everyone seems to have a slight curiosity about. And then there are those who are totally obsessed with it or completely against it. I would say I fall into the category of obsession. Astrology is something I have always been interested in, and as the years go by I find my passion increasing as I learn more and more. There is so much to learn about astrology that most people do not realize. It is so much more fluid than we realize (nothing in life is black and white).
I am a scorpio. When I was around 11 years old or so, I used to not really like my sun sign. I felt like it was too dark for me. I vividly remember thinking, “I wish my sign was more lighthearted and fun, like aries or sagittarius.” I think it’s a really funny story because as I got older I learned about birth charts, and how we all have not just one, but several signs that influence different aspects of our lives and personalities. In astrology, most people tend to think strictly about their sun signs. It is true that our sun sign has a great influence on our personalities, but we are also heavily influenced by our moon signs and ascendant signs. While sun signs relate to overall personality, moon signs relate to emotions and ascendant signs relate to how we present ourselves to the world. Well, I eventually looked up my birth chart and found out my moon sign was aries and my ascendent sign was sagittarius! I thought it was so ironic that those were the two specific signs I had always been drawn to, before I even knew that they had anything to do with me.
Anyway, as I got older and learned more about both scorpio and my own personality, I felt much more connected to my sun sign. Scorpios are super intense — very obsessive and passionate. Their mindsets tend to be black-and-white, all-or-nothing, now-or-never, etc. They feel things so strongly that they can easily become too overwhelmed by their own emotions. When focused on something/someone, they have tunnel vision and tune out the rest of the world while diving themselves deep into whatever they are obsessing over. Because the scorpio energy is so strong, others are typically drawn to them or completely repulsed. They can be super blunt at times which can make others feel uncomfortable, and that’s something I can totally relate to.
Another thing about scorpios is that they are fiercely vengeful. They feel things so strongly that it is so hard for them to let go of grudges and forgive/forget. Scorpios are masters of getting revenge and using their “stingers.” In my younger years I was all about getting revenge on those who did me wrong, but as I got older I realized that forgiveness is so much more healing. Although, it’s difficult for me to forget about how much pain a person had caused.
Scorpio is a water sign (along with pisces and cancer), which is something I certainly relate to. Water signs are extremely sensitive and emotional. This also makes them extra intuitive. Water signs appear calm at the surface while hiding their feelings deep, deep below.
My moon sign is in aries. Aries are determined, competitive, and love being challenged. I believe my scorpio/aries combo is what gives me extremist tendencies. My ascendent sign is in sagittarius — they are adventurous risk-takers. Both aries and sagittarius are fire signs with a lot of passion, but they also like to keep things fun and light.
Overall I truly believe that astrology has a deep impact on our personalities, our relationships, and our lives in general. At the same time, I also believe that we are not 100% restricted by the signs. If you are aware of how the signs affect you, you have the ability to rise above those natural instincts and make conscious changes in your life. For example, knowing that as a scorpio I tend to hold grudges and seek revenge, I can work extra hard on forgiveness and letting go of what no longer serves me. It does not mean I am bound to be this way for the rest of my life. I think astrology is a great tool for self-improvement.
